Lodge On Iron Mountain – History Of The Property

The road to the Inn began in August 1997 when Vikki laid out the path which became the road through the forest, up the mountainside to the knoll where the view goes on forever. May 1998 saw the doors thrown open to welcome the Inn’s first guests. Vikki’s dream for an elegant log home where guests would enjoy luxury and “old shoe comfort” in equal measure had become a reality.

Watching her self-designed dream home take shape, after eight and one-half months Vikki was ready to share the magic of the mountains with guests who would soon became friends. Since then thousands of guests have come to relax, refresh and enjoy a slower pace of life enjoying the trails, library of eclectic books, bird watching and stretching out on the hammock watching the clouds roll by. In fact, the area stole the hearts of so many guests that they bought houses and/or land and never left Johnson County!

Cozy and friendly are terms used by guests to describe the feelings which surround them at the Inn. Harmony and life’s simple pleasures to share with a loved one are hallmarks at the Inn.

Each bedroom reflects a different aspect of the Innkeeper’s life. Hunting prints, horse figurines and “run with the wind” border in the Equestrian Bedroom recall her days of fox hunting, showing and competitive trail rides. A remote controlled cast iron stove is especially welcome on chilly winter mornings. As the flame goes up in the fire, often the flame goes up in the bed. Lying in bed, the view of the mountains out the window changes with each hour. And at night, candles and soft music surround you in the whirlpool bath.

The Family Memories Bedroom with its antique furniture and memorabilia of Vikki’s grand- and great-grandparents remind visitors of the importance of family. One of a pair of twin bedspreads made by her great-grandmother is now a picture over the bed, it and its mate are waiting for the day when the grandchildren come to hear the story of Great-great-great grandmother’s sewing skills.

The light and airy Green Bedroom combines Vikki’s love of theater and the out-of-doors. Guests enjoy their first morning‘s cup of coffee and muffin on the private balcony overlooking the valley and mountains. “Is it smoke or is it mist?” Guests can’t tell the difference as the white clouds drift up the valley. The sun picks out pockets of color on the mountains until the mountainside is covered in orange, red and yellow. Goldfinches and cardinals swirl round below looking for seeds and bugs.

Aaron Copeland wrote a symphony “Appalachian Spring” and it is that song which is the genesis for the Appalachian Spring Bedroom. April 21st was the day on which Vikki first found the land on which to build a dream - it was even a full moon - and so to commemorate that momentous day, this room is done in blues, and whites and florals. A very popular room with honeymooners, the 4 poster bed has been the happy beginning for many new memories.

Cozying up in front of the Great Room wood burning fireplace on winter evenings enjoying a cookie from the bottomless cookie jar is one of life‘s simple pleasures. In summer sitting on the Deck listening to the whippoorwill’s nighttime call and watching the full moon rise from behind the trees which surround the Inn is another simple pleasure.

In fall, the katydids sing their end of summer’s song and the gardens and forests burst into a riot of color when Jack Frost paints the leaves. But spring is a magical time of year... leaves tentatively unfurling on branches, green shoots reaching for the sun after a long cold winter then bursting into bloom. A blaze of yellow and white and pink and red while the spring peepers begin their songs and the birds singing more lustily.

Many spirited conversations occur in the Dining Room where candlelight breakfasts and dinners are served. Or enjoy the summer breezes while sharing your breakfast time with hummingbirds and chickadees on one of the Porches which surround the Inn. Because our guests are on vacation, we do not have a set seating for breakfast. All we ask is that guests come down sometime before 10:00 a.m. – even if that is 9:55!

Many guests enjoy a hike on the property’s trails before or after breakfast and many enjoy just relaxing in the library corner with a good book from our “exchange library”, or playing one of the various games at the game table. Jenga, Mountain Climb and cribbage are very popular. Also popular are puzzles, both 3-D and flat.

In every season there are reasons to visit the Lodge and Northeast Tennessee. To name just a few: hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail, bicycling on the Virginia Creeper Trail, golfing, fly fishing in stocked streams and Watauga Lake, kayaking, swimming, water skiing, renting a pontoon boat and having a picnic on an island in the lake, attending musical events and country auctions, live theater, outdoor dramas, country auctions, Indian powwows, and oh so much more.
